Corporate Owner-Operator Model

Rather than purely passive ownership, Agrium Capital establishes local champion special purpose vehicle (SPV) with proven management and at-scale experience.

Geography

Agrium Capital focuses on regions where there is both strong agricultural potential, rapid population growth and a clear need for food system transformation.

These markets offer significant import substitution opportunities. They often have large land bases, strong local demand, attractive productivity and the potential to develop both domestic and export-oriented agri-food systems. They also have an urgent need for investment in climate resilience, food security, water stewardship, land restoration and rural economic development.

Our geographic strategy is focused on markets where investment can help deliver food sovereignty, create local employment, develop champion local brands, restore landscapes and open new routes to regional and international markets.

Rod Bassett,
CEO, Agrium Capital

“There is an unmistakable need for stronger, more resilient food systems. What is missing is catalytic capital and finance structures to deliver investments, at scale, in future food systems where it is needed most. That gap is our investment thesis: climate-resilient, vertically integrated and inclusive agri-food systems can deliver returns that compete for capital anywhere in the world, while simultaneously reducing long-term agricultural risk and strengthening food security. We do not treat financial performance and impact as a trade-off — at this scale, and geographic focus, one depends on the other.

Agrium Capital takes active control across land, farming operations, processing and market channels — capturing value at every layer — and we underwrite each platform against measurable climate, nature and people outcomes with the same rigour we apply to financial return. The result is, institutionally-scaled platforms, each designed to compound in value as we consolidate.

We are not approaching this from a distance. Years of work have gone into the relationships, the project pipeline and the operating capability required to move from ambition to delivery. That combination of trust, capital structuring and delivery capability is what allows us to move at the pace and scale this opportunity demands.”
